Scranton class of 1973 holds 50-year reunion

The Scranton High School Class of 1973 met at the Scranton Community room Saturday, June 17, for a come and go reunion.

Melanie Neary Hoyt was in charge this year with plenty of laughter and stories and tons of picture taking. Leesa Lewis Squibb was recognized for her hosting previous reunions over the years. Refreshments were spread out and some special treats sent to them by Michael Skalla’s sister and his daughter in Michael’s memory.

A time of refection  was held for missing classmates, all whom passed away far too soon, including Doug Wurr, Tony Collins, Dennis Fetters, Jeanise Spencer, Jim Walker, Teresa Squibb Durlam, Mary Jo Parks Halterman, Dale McDonald, Chris Larson, Rick Ambrose, Bill Steward and Michael Skalla.

Attending were (front, from left) Jane Walker Wendel, Sharon Gotter Shelbourn, Leesa Lewis Squibb, Cheryl Fetter Johns, Melanie Neary Hoyt and Ken Jubell; and (back, from left) Mike Stevens, Craig Skalla, Allen Robson, John Marks, Gary Hoyt and Brent Goughnour.

Laughter and stories of memories were shared along with a short version of life after school from each person. Messages were read from classmates who were unable to attend: Rick Harris, Henry Buswell, Craig Lawton. Kaija Kuusisto Wolf was at home with her recuperating husband. Nancy Spencer DiGannantionio called the day before saying hello and wishing all well.

Sharon Gotter Shelbourn’s mother kept a lot of pictures and mementos, newspapers and newspaper articles so Sharon brought them for everyone to read, some things many of classmates had never seen before. There was also correspondence from Doug Wurr’s mother congratulating the class of which Doug was a member. These were treasures for many. It was very thoughtful for Sharon to share these with the class.

The evening was followed up with a tremendous thunderstorm as 19 classmates and spouses attended a meal at the 209 Main in Paton.
